The ruling Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP) has nominated Ruslanas Baranovas, an incumbent MP, as its candidate for the upcoming parliamentary by-election in the Nalšia North constituency, 15min news portal first reported.

Baranovas, elected to the Seimas in 2024 via the LSDP party list, confirmed the nomination to BNS on Tuesday. He emphasised that the key consideration is not his existing mandate but who can best represent the interests of Nalšia North constituents, which include parts of Ignalina and Zarasai districts.

“The essence is not whether I have a mandate or not, but which person can best represent the interests of Nalšia North residents and help solve their problems. I hope to convince them during the campaign that I can be that person in Vilnius,” Baranovas said. He added that his family roots in the Ignalina district may have influenced the decision.

The by-election follows the unexpected death in May of Jevgenijus Šuklinas, the constituency’s sitting MP. Early voting will take place on November 8, with candidate registration open until July 13.

In 2024, LSDP fielded Nikolajus Gusevas in the same constituency, who secured 12.73% of the vote but failed to advance to the second round. Baranovas, who ran in Vilnius South, received 12.72% and also did not proceed. Gusevas has ruled out running this time.

Other declared candidates include former presidential hopeful Eduardas Vaitkus, with the Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union and the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania–Christian Families Alliance also planning to nominate candidates.
