Designated Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius presented the programme of the 21st government to the Seimas on Tuesday, addressing societal division and outlining priorities for the incoming cabinet, LRT.lt reports.

The proposed government programme includes strengthening national resilience, improving family policies, increasing incomes, reducing regional disparities, and setting ambitious goals in defence and energy. Key challenges identified in the document are Russian aggression, a shaken international order, the climate crisis, unpredictable artificial intelligence development, worsening demographic trends, and persistent cost-of-living increases.

In his speech, Sinkevičius highlighted growing radical polarisation in Lithuania, stating that political opponents are increasingly viewed not as fellow citizens with differing opinions but as enemies to be discredited. He called on all political opponents to work together to halt this dangerous trend.

He also emphasised demographic issues, noting that Lithuania faces one of the most severe demographic crises in Europe. Sinkevičius stressed the need for comprehensive solutions, framing each child as a symbol of hope that overcomes fears about the future and economic hardship.

Critics, including Laurynas Kasčiūnas, leader of the Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats, questioned how the government would fund its promises. Kasčiūnas warned that unfulfilled commitments would lead to public disappointment. Sinkevičius acknowledged the difficulty of the task ahead but did not provide immediate financial details.

Other priorities mentioned include tackling rising prices, reducing income inequality, regional policy, economic growth, innovation, and defence.
