President calls for a united, prosperous and invincible Lithuania
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda has urged the nation to foster unity, democracy, and resilience against adversaries, as the country marked State Day and National Anthem Day on July 6.
Speaking during a flag-raising ceremony in Vilnius’ Simono Daukanto Square, Nausėda said Lithuania’s history of hostile neighbours had taught it to turn challenges into strengths. “When they try to divide us, we unite; when they pressure us, we harden and grow stronger; when they try to enslave us, we choose freedom even more fiercely,” he said.
He described July 6 as an opportunity to celebrate the state, reflect on historical lessons, and acknowledge modern achievements. The date commemorates the 773rd anniversary of King Mindaugas’ coronation in 1253, which established Lithuania as a recognised European state.
Nausėda emphasised that Mindaugas’ vision of a united Lithuania had enabled the country to withstand external pressures and ensure the safety of its people. He noted that Lithuania continues to apply these lessons today by strengthening national resilience, rallying allies, and supporting Ukraine.
“We still use the gift of King Mindaugas,” the president said. He added that Lithuania’s future depends on preserving unity: “As long as a freedom-loving, strong, and united Lithuanian nation lives by the Nemunas and Neris rivers, Lithuania will always be.”
The official celebrations included a flag-raising ceremony and a national song festival event in Vingis Park, where leaders and citizens sang the national anthem, “Tautiška giesmė.” State Day was declared a national holiday in 1990 after Lithuania restored independence.
