Lithuanian leaders congratulate US on 250th independence anniversary

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda and acting Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė have sent congratulatory messages to the United States on the occasion of its 250th independence anniversary, reports LRT.

In his message, Nausėda emphasized Lithuania’s strong alliance with the US, stating: “In an era of global uncertainty, Lithuania proudly stands alongside the United States—not only as a reliable ally but also as a steadfast friend.” He highlighted Lithuania’s commitment to strengthening NATO’s collective defense, noting the country’s defense budget has grown tenfold since 2014, reaching an unprecedented 5.4% of GDP this year.

“We have never considered, and will never consider, the US security commitment to NATO as self-evident—it is a mutually beneficial effort where we fulfill our obligations, take responsibility for our security, and are always among the first to heed your call for unity,” the president’s message read.

Nausėda underscored that expanding strategic partnership with the US remains a priority for Lithuania, with the presence of US troops in the country serving as a key deterrent against regional threats and a cornerstone of national security.

In her message, Ruginienė stressed the importance of Lithuania’s strategic partnership with the US, rooted in shared commitments to freedom, democracy, and the rule of law. She noted that the deployment of US troops in Lithuania remains vital for regional security and demonstrates alliance solidarity.

“I am confident that, in an increasingly complex security environment, the partnership between Lithuania and the US will grow, strengthening the transatlantic bond and contributing to a safer future,” she said.

The US declared independence on July 4, 1776.
