Complaints arise over 11-meter slide in renovated Vilnius square

Residents have raised concerns about a newly installed 11-meter metal slide in the recently renovated Pelesos Square in Vilnius, according to a report by LRT.lt.

The complaints first surfaced on social media, where one resident claimed the slide was too steep and that a raised section in the middle could pose a danger to children using it.

A mother told LRT.lt that her three-year-old daughter tried the slide only once. “The descent was definitely not smooth, safe, or especially fun,” she said. The child reportedly experienced minor bruising to her back and thigh but avoided serious injury. The woman added that her seven-year-old son, who weighs more, found the slide less problematic due to his greater weight, which made his descent more stable.

Vilnius Municipality has responded, stating that the slide is certified for use by children aged 8 and older, with a maximum weight limit of 65 kg, and that adult supervision is required. Gabrielius Grubinskas of the municipality’s Communications Department said no structural changes are planned, as the slide meets safety standards. However, additional measures will be taken to improve visibility of usage guidelines.

“We aim to ensure the information is clearly visible, so we will install an additional informational sign at the base of the slide and place a sticker at the top indicating the age restriction,” Grubinskas said.
