Prosecutor appeals sentence in 15-year-old murder case, seeks harsher penalty

Vilnius prosecutors have filed an appeal against a court ruling in the murder case of a 15-year-old, demanding a longer prison sentence for the convicted minor, LRT reports.

Lina Nemeikaitė, a representative of the Vilnius Regional Court, confirmed on Thursday that the prosecutor’s appeal had been received. “Today, we received the prosecutor’s appeal. It requests a change in the sentence, seeking the maximum penalty and an adjustment to non-pecuniary damages,” she told BNS.

The most severe penalty for such a crime committed by a minor is 10 years in prison. Prosecutor Vytautas Jancevičius had initially requested this maximum term during the first-instance trial.

However, the Vilnius Regional Court reduced the sentence. In June, the court handed down an eight-year prison term to the teenager, born in mid-2010, for the brutal murder of a peer in Vilnius’ Žvėrynas district.
