Storm damage reported across Lithuania as heavy winds and rain hit

Residents across Lithuania have shared images of storm damage after heavy winds and rain swept through the country, with southern regions among the hardest hit, LRT reports.

In Alytus district, meteorologists recorded nearly a third of the typical July rainfall in just a few hours, with approximately three large buckets of water per square metre. Roads were flooded, and drivers were urged to exercise caution.

Varėna district also saw significant damage. Algis Kašėta, mayor of Varėna, reported power outages in parts of Valkininkai eldership, particularly in Paklėštarės, Čižiūnų villages, and Valkininkai town. Residents were advised to avoid dangerous areas, stay away from fallen trees and power lines, and prioritise safety.

Social media users shared accounts of the storm’s impact. In Alytus district, one resident described strong winds uprooting trees and downing power lines around 14:45, with heavy rain continuing until at least 15:12. Another reported a brief power outage near Troškūnai in Anykščiai district, with the entire house shaking. A fallen tree was also photographed on a road in Akmeniškės, Vilnius district.

Hail was reported in Alytus and Lazdijai districts around 17:00–18:00, while a rare sighting of lightning striking a tree directly was captured in Kaunas. The Energy Distribution Operator (ESO) confirmed that 4,536 households were without power across the country due to the storm.
