Child falls from fifth-floor window in Kelmė

A toddler fell from a fifth-floor window in Kelmė and sustained serious injuries, according to a report by LRT and ELTA.

The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon at around 15:20. The child, born in 2023, was taken to the Republican Šiauliai Hospital and admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Initial reports indicate the 1.5-year-old fell through an open window at approximately 14:30 the same day.

Doctors describe the child’s condition as serious but stable. The toddler has been diagnosed with multiple contusions, a fractured clavicle, ribs, and a left femur. Dobilas Ovsiukas, a pediatric anesthesiologist and reanimatologist, noted that the child was fortunate given the height of the fall. He urged parents to ensure windows are closed when airing out their homes.

An investigation has been launched under the Criminal Code article addressing severe health impairment due to negligence. This is the second similar incident in the Šiauliai region recently. On Monday evening, another child, born in 2024, fell from a fourth-floor window and was taken to Šiauliai Hospital at 23:00 before being transferred to Kaunas Hospital for further treatment. Authorities are investigating potential violations of parental or guardian rights and duties.
