Lithuanians remain optimistic but expect more from the EU

A new Eurobarometer survey shows that despite geopolitical uncertainties, Lithuanians remain highly optimistic about their family and national future, viewing the European Union (EU) as a source of stability and security, reports LRT.

According to the latest European Parliament (EP) Eurobarometer data, 66% of Lithuanians view the EU’s future with hope. While 57% feel somewhat pessimistic about the world, 70% remain optimistic about Lithuania’s prospects. The highest optimism is reserved for personal and family futures, with 81% of respondents expressing a positive outlook.

The survey reveals that 77% of Lithuanians see the EU as a safe haven during geopolitical instability. Positive perceptions of the EU as a stable region have reached their second-highest level in a decade, at 75% across the bloc.

“In times of universal uncertainty, Europeans increasingly see the EU as a beacon of stability. In a turbulent world, this trust is Europe’s greatest asset. There is also a clear expectation that we will act decisively to ensure the safety, well-being, and opportunities of our citizens,” said EP President Roberta Metsola in a press release.

When asked to describe their emotional state, Lithuanians most commonly cited hope (40%), calm (39%), and trust (36%). Others mentioned insecurity (37%) and anxiety (32%). EU-wide, sentiment is split between uncertainty (44%) and hope (43%).

74% of EU citizens consider EU membership beneficial, the highest figure since 2013 (previously matched in early 2025). Trust in the EU remains high in Lithuania at 89%, well above the EU average.

Lithuanians identify the EU’s most significant contributions as economic growth (49%), job opportunities (40%), improved living standards (37%), and its role in maintaining peace and security (37%). EU-wide, the primary benefit is seen as the bloc’s contribution to peace and security (40%), followed by stronger cooperation among member states (34%).

54% of Lithuanians believe the EU should prioritise security and defence. Other key areas include energy independence (32%) and economic competitiveness (31%). EU-wide, citizens also prioritise defence and security (39%) and energy independence (35%).

78% of Lithuanians (68% EU-wide) want the EU to take a more active role in protecting citizens from global crises and security risks. 93% in Lithuania (90% EU-wide) believe member states should be more united, and 95% (90% EU-wide) think the EU should encourage adherence to international law. Additionally, 84% of Lithuanians (73% EU-wide) want the EU to have more tools to address global challenges.

On quality of life, 81% of Lithuanians (83% EU-wide) report satisfaction with their current living standards.
