Alytus to mark Border Guard Day with parade and ceremonies

Alytus will host celebrations for the professional holiday of Lithuania’s border guards on Monday, as reported by the BNS news agency.
The day will begin with a mass at the city’s Church of the Holy Guardian Angels, followed by a parade of State Border Guard Service (VSAT) officers and flag-bearing units through the streets to Rotušė Square. A formal ceremony will take place there, including awards for distinguished border guards.
Seventy-three graduates of the Border Guard School will take their oath of service to Lithuania and receive their diplomas. The official programme will be followed by a concert by the Lithuanian Police Representative Wind Orchestra, a display by border guard dog handlers, and demonstrations by the VSAT helicopter crew and the Special Purpose Unit Kovas.
An exhibition of border guard equipment, weaponry, and special gear will be on display in Rotušė Square, including a VSAT helicopter.
The origins of Border Guard Day date back to interwar Lithuania. The holiday was first observed in 1922, when the Minister of National Defence, Jonas Šimkus, designated June 29 as the holiday of the Border Guard Regiment. The VSAT currently employs around 4,000 officers and staff.
