Lithuania sets new June heat record

Lithuania has set a new national record for the highest June temperature after Druskininkai recorded 36.3°C on Sunday, according to the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service.

Paulius Starkus, a synoptic specialist, told LRT Radio that this reading not only breaks the previous record for June 28 but also surpasses the all-time June high. The previous June record was 35.7°C, measured in Kaišiadorys in 2019. The prior record for June 28 was 34°C, set in Druskininkai exactly two years ago.

According to Meteo LT, this is the eighth daily heat record in Lithuania this year. In comparison, the country recorded 23 such records in 2025, 18 in 2024, 16 in 2023, 13 in 2022, and 6 in 2021. Heat records have been observed roughly eight times more frequently than cold records between 2021 and 2026.

Starkus noted that temperatures reached 31–36°C across much of Lithuania on Sunday, with the highest readings in the southwest. The heatwave, which moved from Western Europe, is expected to persist until Monday, with forecasts suggesting temperatures could rise further to 32–37°C in many areas.

Amid the heat, emergency services reported heat-related incidents. In Klaipėda, a woman suffered heatstroke on Saturday, and a man lost consciousness on Sunday due to a heart-related issue, according to Aleksandras Siakki, head of Klaipėda’s rescue services. The man, whose heart had stopped, was revived and transported to the hospital conscious. No drowning incidents were reported.

Authorities advise the public to limit physical activity and time outdoors, seek shade, wear head coverings, stay hydrated, and avoid alcohol and beaches during peak heat hours.
