Lithuania falls just short of new June 27 temperature record

Lithuania missed setting a new June 27 temperature record by just half a degree on Saturday, according to the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service.

Preliminary data shows the highest temperature was recorded in Druskininkai, reaching 32.8°C. The existing record for June 27, set in 2022, stands at 33.2°C, Meteo LT reported on Facebook.

The service forecasts even hotter conditions on Sunday, with temperatures expected to climb between 31°C and 36°C across the country.

A heatwave currently affecting Western Europe has reached Lithuania, with high temperatures persisting from Saturday through Monday. On Saturday, most regions saw temperatures between 28°C and 33°C, while Monday may bring 32°C to 37°C in many areas.

Elena Klyukina, a synoptist from Meteo LT, suggested that new heat records could be possible. The highest June temperature on record in Lithuania was 35.7°C, measured at the Kaišiadorys station in 2019.

Authorities advise residents to limit physical activity and time spent outdoors, seek shade, wear head coverings, and stay hydrated. The State Labour Inspectorate noted that high temperatures increase the risk of workplace accidents, and employees have the right to refuse work if heat conditions endanger their health.

Retail chains report increased sales of ice, watermelons, mineral water, and grilling products during such hot days.
