Vilnius district allocates €420,000 for church renovations and religious communities

Vilnius District Municipality has allocated €420,000 to support religious communities, their activities, and the renovation of sacred sites, as well as essential repair works, LRT reports.

The funding aims to preserve religious and cultural heritage, improve the condition of places of worship, and ensure better conditions for community activities. According to the municipality, the financial support will help address urgent repair needs, maintain sacred heritage, and implement social, cultural, and educational initiatives.

“Religious communities are an integral part of Vilnius District’s identity, culture, and strong sense of community. This year, increased funding will allow them to undertake more ambitious projects—from long-overdue repairs to preserving invaluable sacred heritage for future generations,” said Mayor Robertas Duchnevičius.

The funds will be used for renovations of churches, chapels, and other religious buildings, including roofs, fences, stairs, and interior spaces, as well as the purchase of necessary equipment. Priority is given to structures in poor condition requiring immediate attention.

The largest allocations include €80,000 for the reconstruction of the roof of the Blessed Michael Sopocko Church in Juodšiliai, €72,000 for the repair of the bell tower and roof of St. Michael the Archangel Parish in Rukainiai, €66,000 for the interior renovation of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish in Maišiagala, and €50,000 for the interior renovation of St. Michael the Archangel Parish in Nemenčinė.

Additional funding has been distributed to religious communities and parishes in Paberžė, Eitminiškiai, Dūkštos, Karvis, Riešė, Lavoriškės, Medininkai, Parudaminys, Sužionys, and Bezdonys for infrastructure renewal and maintenance projects.

Last year, two calls for applications were announced for traditional religious communities and associations, with a total of €320,000 allocated to 27 active groups in the district. This year, €420,000 was distributed in a single call, benefiting 14 communities and associations.
