Heatwave in Lithuania: record temperatures expected

Lithuania is bracing for extreme heat as temperatures are set to reach up to 36°C over the weekend, with forecasts suggesting a possible 37°C on Monday, according to the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service.

Sinoptikė Elena Kliukina from the service noted that the heatwave, originating from Western Europe, could even break existing records. The current June record stands at 35.7°C, measured in Kaišiadorys in 2019.

The most vulnerable groups include those with chronic illnesses, infants, and the elderly. Liucija Vaitkevičiūtė, a doctor at Santaros Clinics, warned that common complaints during heatwaves include headaches and dangerously low blood pressure, which can lead to fainting in public places.

Employers are also urged to protect workers, particularly those outdoors. Saulius Balčiūnas from the State Labour Inspectorate stated that when temperatures exceed 28°C, workers must receive at least 40 minutes of special breaks during an eight-hour workday, with breaks provided hourly. Failure to comply can result in fines starting at €120 for first-time offences, with higher penalties for repeated violations or severe health impacts on employees.

Firefighters have issued warnings for those seeking relief near water bodies. Renaldas Bernotas, a rescue firefighter, highlighted that prolonged sun exposure followed by a sudden plunge into cold water can disrupt heart function, leading to loss of consciousness or even drowning. He noted that most drowning victims in June are middle-aged men who overestimate their swimming abilities.

The heatwave is expected to ease by Tuesday as the high temperatures shift eastward.
