Lithuania values pope’s closeness to the country, acting PM tells Vatican representative

Acting Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė met with Archbishop Paul R. Gallagher, the Holy See’s Secretary for Relations with States and International Organisations, the government said in a statement.

The meeting highlighted the long-standing and special bilateral relations between Lithuania and the Holy See, noting the historical significance of the Holy See’s refusal to recognise the Soviet occupation of Lithuania. This experience, the statement said, further strengthens Lithuanian support for Ukraine as it defends its own freedom today.

Ruginienė expressed gratitude for “the clear and globally heard position of Pope Leo XIV on Russia’s aggression.” She also renewed an invitation for Pope Leo XIV to visit Lithuania during the 2027–2028 Family Year celebrations.

“The people of Lithuania deeply appreciate the pope’s closeness to our country and its believers. A visit by Pope Leo XIV would be an exceptional source of encouragement for Lithuanians, strengthening the spirit of faith, hope, and unity, as well as an important sign for all those in Europe seeking moral support and the hope of peace,” Ruginienė said.

The meeting also recalled the World Apostolic Congress of Mercy held in Vilnius this month, which was blessed by Pope Leo XIV, and emphasised its significance for the community of believers.
