Future government to see more changes than expected as ministerial names are discussed

Lithuania’s incoming government will undergo more changes than initially anticipated, with discussions underway over several ministerial positions, reports LRT.

Prime minister-designate Mindaugas Sinkevičius confirmed that only two Social Democratic ministers—Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas and Transport Minister Juras Taminskas—will retain their roles. He stated that more than three new ministers from the Democratic coalition partner will join the cabinet.

President Gitanas Nausėda has highlighted the responsibility of Social Democratic Interior Minister Vladislavas Kondratovičius following a data leak at the Centre of Registers. According to Lrytas sources, Culture Minister Vaida Aleknavičienė’s position is also under discussion.

Sinkevičius plans to present his proposed cabinet lineup next week but stressed that at least six or seven ministerial posts delegated by the new coalition partner, the Democrats, will change. He confirmed that Rita Tamašunienė, Edvinas Grikšas, and Robertas Kaunas will remain in their positions, while Juras Taminskas will also continue. Other roles are still under consideration.

Interior Minister Kondratovičius stated he has not discussed his future with his party leader, calling it a political decision. A meeting with Sinkevičius has not yet been scheduled.

Sources suggest Martynas Katelynas, a former member of the right-wing National Union party, could replace Kondratovičius. Katelynas declined to comment on private discussions but was previously considered for party membership. Social Democratic MP Rasa Budbergytė praised his intelligence and ambition.

Seimas member Audrius Radvilavičius is reportedly in contention for the Environment Ministry. He confirmed discussions with Sinkevičius, noting they exchanged views on policy expectations. Another potential candidate, MP Alvydas Mockus, cited his experience in environmental protection, including four years as an inspector.

Social Democratic deputy chair Budbergytė acknowledged both Mockus and Radvilavičius as strong candidates but emphasised the need for political strength in the role, given the ministry’s complex interests.

Culture Minister Aleknavičienė acknowledged the uncertainty of politics, while Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys’ future will be decided after his meeting with Sinkevičius. President Nausėda has set a condition for Budrys: normalising relations with China by the New Year.
