Prime minister candidate Sinkevičius presents priorities to parliament

Prime minister candidate Mindaugas Sinkevičius presented his priorities to the Lithuanian parliament (Seimas) on Wednesday evening, with a focus on demography and defence, LRT.lt reports.

President Gitanas Nausėda, who had just returned from a visit to Poland, introduced Sinkevičius, the leader of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party, as the candidate for prime minister. Parliamentarians will vote on the new government leader next week.

Nausėda emphasised the need to maintain at least 5% of GDP funding for defence, ensuring transparent and effective use of these funds to strengthen national security, continue support for Ukraine, and prepare for Lithuania’s upcoming EU Council presidency.

He also highlighted the importance of addressing domestic issues, including family support policies, long-term demographic solutions, accelerated regional investment, energy independence, and sustainable business growth to ensure employment and economic development.

Sinkevičius, in his address, pledged decisive and purposeful action for the remainder of the term, stating that the new coalition government aims to work energetically and competently. He stressed the need for unity, mutual respect, and collaboration to build a strong and prosperous Lithuania, while also addressing social issues, demographic challenges, and the opportunities and risks of artificial intelligence.

However, Sinkevičius faced criticism in parliament, including from liberal MP Simonas Kairys, who demanded quick results given the government’s second change in leadership. Conservative Laurynas Kasčiūnas questioned whether the state would avoid excessive borrowing while implementing its programme.

Sinkevičius responded by assuring fiscal discipline, stating that while some flexibility exists, it will be managed within the government’s implementation plan.
