Seimas backs proposal for early parliamentary election in Nalšia North constituency
The Lithuanian parliament, Seimas, has backed a draft resolution proposing to hold an early parliamentary election in the single-member Nalšia North constituency on November 8 this year, LRT reports.
A total of 77 MPs unanimously voted in favor of the resolution during Thursday’s session. The document, submitted by Seimas Speaker Juozas Olekas and endorsed by the State Governance and Municipalities Committee, is expected to be adopted next week, on June 30.
The early election became necessary after the mandate of Jevgenijus Šuklinas, a liberal MP elected in the constituency in 2024, was terminated following his death on May 28. The Central Electoral Commission (VRK) revoked his mandate at the beginning of June. Šuklinas, a well-known canoeist, was a member of the Liberal Movement’s parliamentary group.
Under the Electoral Code, early elections in a single-member constituency must be held within six months if a parliamentarian’s term is cut short. However, such elections are not held if less than a year remains until the next regular parliamentary elections, as stipulated by the Constitution.
