Early parliamentary election proposed for Nalšia’s northern constituency in November
Lithuanian parliamentarians will consider a draft resolution to hold an early election for a single-member constituency in Nalšia’s northern district on November 8, as reported by ELTA.
Seimas Speaker Juozas Olekas submitted the proposal on Tuesday, which received unanimous support from lawmakers. The draft has been referred to the Seimas Committee on State Administration and Local Authorities for review, with a return to the plenary session expected later this week, on June 25.
The early election follows the death of liberal MP Jevgenijus Šuklinas, who was elected in the constituency in 2024 as part of the Liberal Movement and served in its parliamentary group. Šuklinas, a well-known canoeist, had previously worked in the Visaginas Municipal Council and served as acting mayor. The Central Electoral Commission annulled his mandate in early June.
Under the Electoral Code, early elections for a single-member constituency must be held within six months if a parliamentarian’s term is cut short. However, no early election is required if less than a year remains until the next general parliamentary election, as stipulated by the Constitution.
