Lithuanian conservative criticises foreign minister over China relations

Lithuanian conservative MP Žygimantas Pavilionis has accused the government of “handing over” Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys to China, calling the situation “regrettable,” as reported by LRT.

During a discussion on LRT Television’s programme “Dienos tema” about Budrys’ future, social democrat Remigijus Motuzas, chair of the Seimas Foreign Affairs Committee, stated that neither his party nor its parliamentary group had expressed a need to replace the minister. However, he acknowledged that changes in government composition often lead to personnel shifts.

Pavilionis, deputy chair of the committee, claimed that Budrys had been “thrown under the wheels of Chinese communists.”

Motuzas noted that while Budrys is widely regarded as a professional and respected diplomat in Europe and beyond, political considerations often influence such decisions. He added that coalition partners have expressed dissatisfaction, with some claiming Budrys does not implement the government’s programme, while others argue he is not aligned with their party.

Motuzas confirmed that no formal complaints about Budrys had been raised within his own faction or party. He emphasised that professionalism remains a key criterion, though political factors also play a role. The final decision, he said, would likely depend on discussions between the prime minister and the president, who traditionally proposes the foreign minister candidate.

When asked directly if he would support Budrys continuing in his role, Motuzas replied: “Of course. We have no complaints.”
