Emergency response centre received nearly 19,000 calls over the weekend
Lithuania’s Emergency Response Centre (BPC) reported its busiest weekend since the start of summer, receiving 18,770 calls between 19–21 June, over 10% more than the previous weekend, according to LRT.
Saturday saw the highest activity, with 6,570 calls. The peak period was between 16:00 and midnight, averaging around 400 calls per hour.
Of the total, 5,830 reports were forwarded to police, 4,550 to emergency medical services, 351 to fire and rescue teams, and 267 to environmental protection officers.
BPC deputy director Jelena Montvilienė noted that warmer weather typically increases call volumes due to travel, outdoor activities, and events. Summer weekends with favourable conditions see a rise in accidents and requests for assistance.
The geographical distribution of calls also shifts in summer. This weekend, the Klaipėda region saw a higher volume, driven by tourist and holidaymaker activity. Strong winds and rainfall contributed to over 30 callouts for fallen trees, primarily in Kaunas County, as well as Lazdijai, Biržai, Skuodas, and Jurbarkas districts.
Road incidents also rose, with firefighters responding to around 40, up from 14 the previous weekend. Fire and rescue teams also conducted seven water rescue operations, saving five people.
With the upcoming Midsummer (Joninės) celebrations and continuing hot weather, BPC anticipates a further surge in calls and urges the public to prioritise safety. Last year, 10,760 calls were made to emergency services during the 23–24 June holiday.
