Conservatives propose higher childcare benefits, nursery places from 1.5 years
The Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats (TS-LKD) have proposed increasing parental and childcare benefits and guaranteeing nursery places for children starting at 18 months to address demographic challenges and boost birth rates, LRT reports.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, TS-LKD faction leader Laurynas Kasčiūnas said the party had prepared an analytical study based on scientific research to tackle the current situation. “We are not talking about punishing those without children or promoting nightclubs. This is a state duty, and we must try to make changes,” he said.
Under the proposal, families opting for childcare until 18 months would receive 100% of their salary as a benefit. Those choosing two years of childcare would get 70% of their salary in the first year and 50% in the second, with increased minimum benefits for low-income families. The party also suggests lowering the current nursery eligibility age from two years to 18 months.
