Colonel Jurskis takes command of Lithuanian Volunteer Forces

Colonel Ramūnas Jurskis has assumed command of the Lithuanian Volunteer Forces (KASP), the country’s military announced on Friday.

Outgoing commander Colonel Darius Vaicikauskas formally handed over leadership, including the symbolic scepter, to Jurskis during a ceremony. Vaicikauskas will continue his service as deputy commander of the Land Forces.

Lithuania’s Chief of Defence, General Raimundas Vaikšnoras, highlighted the Volunteer Forces’ role in implementing the national total defence model. “For more than three decades, the KASP have proven to be an integral part of the Lithuanian Armed Forces and national defence. Volunteers have demonstrated their value in international operations alongside allies, as well as in supporting the state during the COVID-19 pandemic and illegal migration challenges,” Vaikšnoras said in a statement.

Vaicikauskas was awarded a commemorative firearm by the Minister of National Defence in recognition of his contributions to strengthening national security. Additionally, the leaders of Estonia’s, Latvia’s, and Poland’s volunteer forces presented him with awards for constructive cooperation.

Jurskis previously served as chief of staff of the KASP from 2019 to 2021. He has also held command positions in the Mechanised Infantry Brigade Iron Wolf and the Engineering Battalion. His career includes deployments to international operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Jurskis has been decorated with medals from Lithuania’s national defence system, NATO, and the US Armed Forces.
