Sinkevičius considered foreign minister role but it was not discussed in coalition talks
Virginijus Sinkevičius, leader of the Democrats “For the Sake of Lithuania” party, said he considered returning to work in Lithuania if offered the position of foreign minister, but the role was not on the table during coalition negotiations, LRT reports.
In an interview with LRT Television’s programme “Dienos temai”, Sinkevičius confirmed he had internal discussions with his family about the possibility, but stressed that the foreign ministry portfolio was not part of the talks with the Social Democrats.
“When the offer sounded serious, there were such considerations. We had discussions with my close circle and family, but during the negotiations, this was not on the table,” he said.
He emphasised that the position of foreign minister is a serious responsibility and should always be coordinated with the president. “I don’t know if this reached the president, but in discussions with the Social Democrats, this ministry was not on the table,” Sinkevičius added.
If formally offered the role, he said he would consider it without hesitation. “We have always spoken about a broader government reshuffle, what it would look like. Mindaugas’s decision to run or not for prime minister is very important, as well as the programme and what we would seek to implement. This would certainly influence the final decision,” he said.
