New coalition agreement signed in Lithuania

Lithuania’s Social Democratic Party (LSDP), the Farmers and Greens Union (LVŽS), and the Democratic Union “For Lithuania” have signed a new coalition agreement, forming the third ruling majority in just 18 months, LRT.lt reports.

The move follows a decision by the Social Democrats to reshape the governing coalition, removing the “Nemuno aušra” faction led by Remigijus Žemaitaitis. Disagreements among coalition partners have persisted since the 2024 parliamentary elections, leading to repeated shifts in alliances.

LSDP leader Mindaugas Sinkevičius joked about the instability, saying, “The third time’s the charm, and the fourth will be a guarantee.” He expressed hope that this coalition would bring stability, emphasizing the need for more closed-door discussions to resolve internal differences.

Sinkevičius, who aims to become prime minister, noted that the current government, led by Ingrida Ruginienė, will continue its work this week. He plans to meet with Ruginienė and expects to receive an invitation from the president next week to discuss forming a new government.

LVŽS leader Aurelijus Veryga added that coalition partners are tired of public disputes and prefer resolving differences privately, calling such discussions natural in politics.
