Seimas Speaker Juozas Olekas has announced plans to meet with the elders of parliamentary factions next week to discuss changes in the Seimas committees, LRT reports.
Olekas stated that no decisions have yet been made regarding new committee chairpersons or appointments to the positions of Deputy Speakers. “We agreed that next week we might discuss with the faction elders the specific transitions, as there will likely be some changes in members to ensure proportional representation in all factions,” Olekas told journalists on Thursday.
He added that there have been no proposals or nominations from the factions so far, as they are likely waiting for the signing of the coalition agreement. Olekas also noted that some committee chairpersons from the “Nemuno aušra” party will likely change, as they may take on other roles.
According to Olekas, it is also not yet clear what changes will occur in the Seimas leadership. However, the ruling majority, which has excluded “Nemuno aušra,” will have to give up one Deputy Speaker position, while the Democratic faction “Vardan Lietuvos” will take the position of First Deputy Speaker.
On Thursday, the elders of the three factions forming the ruling majority in the Seimas will sign a coalition agreement. The 21st Government is expected to be formed by Mindaugas Sinkevičius, the leader of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP), who announced his intention to take on this responsibility on Tuesday.
Last week, the leaders and negotiators of the parties that started coalition negotiations agreed on the distribution of ministries. The Democratic Union “Vardan Lietuvos” has been assigned the Ministries of Agriculture, Energy, and Health in the new government. The ruling LSDP will continue to lead nine ministries, while the Lithuanian Farmers, Greens, and Christian Families Union faction in the Seimas will retain control of two ministries: Economy and Innovation, and Justice.
Sinkevičius expects clarity on who might work in the future cabinet after the Joninės festival.
As reported, in early June, the LSDP council decided to change the ruling majority formed last summer, removing “Nemuno aušra” and starting consultations with the Democratic Union “Vardan Lietuvos.” Currently, the ruling majority in the Seimas has 80 members. If a new coalition is formed, it will have slightly fewer, 75 votes.
