Lithuanian government to announce resignation on Tuesday
The Lithuanian government led by Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė plans to announce its resignation on Tuesday, according to a report by BNS cited by LRT.
A spokesperson for the prime minister, Ignas Algirdas Dobrovolskas, confirmed that June 23 is the intended date for the announcement. Under Lithuanian law, the prime minister must submit a written resignation notice to the president, which is first announced during a government meeting. While cabinet meetings typically occur on Wednesdays, an extraordinary session will be called for the resignation announcement. The president must then be formally notified on the same day.
Following the cabinet’s resignation, President Gitanas Nausėda will have up to 15 days to propose a new prime minister candidate to the Seimas (parliament). The candidate, expected to be Social Democratic Party leader Mindaugas Sinkevičius, must then form a new government and present its programme to the Seimas within another 15 days, subject to parliamentary approval.
BNS reported that leaders of three Seimas factions—the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party, the Democratic Union “For Lithuania,” and the Lithuanian Farmers, Greens, and Christian Families Union—plan to sign a new ruling coalition agreement on Thursday. This coalition will form the 21st government, with portfolio allocations already agreed: the Social Democrats will take nine ministries, including Environment, Finance, Defence, Culture, Social Security, Transport, Education, Foreign Affairs, and Interior. The Farmers and Greens, along with the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania–Christian Families Alliance, will retain the Justice and Economy ministries. Social Democrat Juozas Olekas will remain Speaker of the Seimas.
The Social Democrats decided earlier in June to end their coalition with “Nemuno Aušra” and invited the Democratic Union “For Lithuania” to join the majority instead. The new coalition would hold 75 seats in the 141-member Seimas. The Democrats had previously been part of the ruling majority with the Social Democrats and “Nemuno Aušra” from November 2024 to August 2025, before the Social Democrats replaced them with the Farmers and Greens.
