Social democrats, democrats, and farmers to sign coalition agreement tomorrow
Lithuania’s Social Democratic Party (LSDP), the Democratic Union “For Lithuania,” and the Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union plan to sign a ruling coalition agreement on Thursday, forming the basis for the country’s 21st government, LRT reports.
LSDP faction leader Orinta Leiputė confirmed the signing would take place as scheduled. Under the deal, LSDP leader Mindaugas Sinkevičius is set to lead the new government.
The agreement allocates key ministries among the parties: the Democrats will take the Energy, Health, and Agriculture portfolios, while the Farmers and Greens, in coalition with the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania–Christian Families Alliance, will retain the Justice and Economy and Innovation ministries. The remaining nine ministries—Environment, Finance, Defence, Culture, Social Security and Labour, Transport, Education, Science and Sports, Foreign Affairs, and Interior—will go to the LSDP.
Juozas Olekas of the LSDP will remain Speaker of the Seimas (parliament). The coalition partners have committed to a centre-left, socially oriented, financially stable, and investment-friendly policy, grounded in mutual respect, objectivity, trust, transparency, fairness, and political accountability.
The parties have also pledged to avoid public infighting, artificial political tension, and actions that could weaken government stability or national interests. The updated coalition agreement has already been approved by the LSDP and Farmers and Greens councils, with the Democrats’ board expected to endorse it on Wednesday.
Earlier this month, the Social Democrats decided to terminate their coalition agreement with the “Nemuno Aušra” party and invited the Democratic Union to join the majority instead. The new coalition of Social Democrats, Democrats, and Farmers and Greens would hold 75 seats in the Seimas.
The Democrats previously served in the ruling coalition with the Social Democrats and “Nemuno Aušra” from November 2024 to August 2025, before the Social Democrats, following the resignation of then-Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas, replaced them with the Farmers and Greens Union.
