Democratic Party board decides to sign coalition agreement

The board of the Democratic Union “For Lithuania” decided on Tuesday to sign a coalition agreement with the Social Democratic Party and the “Peasant” faction, LRT reports.

Lukas Savickas, the elder of the Democratic Union’s faction in the Seimas, told journalists on Monday that the board’s decision would be made on Tuesday, primarily concerning the text of the coalition agreement itself. The signing of the coalition agreement is planned for Thursday, followed by decisions on ministerial candidates.

According to the agreement, the Democrats, returning to the ruling majority, will take the ministries of Energy, Health, and Agriculture. The “Peasant” faction, working together with the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania–Christian Families Alliance, will retain the ministries of Justice and Economy and Innovation. The remaining nine ministries—Environment, Finance, National Defence, Culture, Social Security and Labour, Transport, Education, Science and Sports, Foreign Affairs, and Interior—will belong to the Social Democratic Party.

LRT previously reported that the Social Democrats decided at the beginning of June to terminate the coalition agreement with “Nemuno Aušra” and instead invited the Democratic Union “For Lithuania” to join the majority. The ruling majority in the Seimas, consisting of Social Democrats, Democrats, and “Peasants,” would have 75 members.

The Democrats were part of the ruling coalition with the Social Democratic Party and “Nemuno Aušra” from November 2024 to August 2025. After the resignation of Social Democratic Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas, the coalition was reformed, and the Social Democrats invited the Lithuanian Peasant and Greens Union and Christian Families Alliance faction to replace the Democrats.
