Savickas unable to confirm if he will be energy minister
Lukas Savickas, the leader of the Democratic Union “For Lithuania” parliamentary group, has not confirmed whether he will take the position of energy minister in the new coalition government, LRT reports.
According to Savickas, the coalition agreement must first be finalised and signed before decisions on ministerial appointments can be made. The party’s board is set to decide on the coalition agreement text on Tuesday, after which discussions on personnel can proceed.
“For now, I cannot confirm this, because the Democratic Union’s board will make its decision on Tuesday. First and foremost, it will be about the text of the coalition agreement itself. Then, after signing, the Democrats will be able to make decisions about the individuals they delegate to these positions,” Savickas told journalists in the Seimas.
He emphasised the importance of following proper procedures and not rushing the process. “There is currently a functioning government. It is clear that an agreement has almost been reached and will soon be confirmed that the government is changing. Then this process will take place,” he said.
Media reports suggest that the Democratic Union “For Lithuania” may secure three ministries—Health, Agriculture, and Energy—in the new coalition. Savickas could replace current Energy Minister Žygimantas Vaičiūnas, who was appointed after the 2024 parliamentary elections.
Savickas also stressed the need for consistency in politics, noting that knowing and adhering to one’s team is crucial for stability. “What we need most in our politics is consistency. We all understand that we have our team jerseys, our organisations, and communities that receive mandates and delegate their representatives,” he said.
The Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP) decided earlier this month to restructure the ruling majority, removing the “Nemuno Aušra” party and beginning consultations with the Democratic Union “For Lithuania”. Last week, coalition negotiators agreed on the distribution of ministries. The new coalition agreement is expected to be signed this week.
