Mindaugas Sinkevičius to become Lithuania’s next prime minister

Social Democratic Party leader Mindaugas Sinkevičius has confirmed he will take on the role of prime minister, following an agreement on a new coalition programme with partner parties, LRT reports.

Sinkevičius first signalled his readiness for the position after his party’s council decided to end its coalition with the “Nemuno aušra” party. If confirmed, he will be Lithuania’s third prime minister since the 2024 parliamentary elections, following Gintautas Paluckas and Inga Ruginienė.

In a social media post, Sinkevičius stated: “I want to inform you that I confirm my commitment to take responsibility for forming a new government and serving as prime minister.” He acknowledged the expectations of Lithuanian citizens and the need for national unity, emphasising the urgency of addressing key challenges.

“I understand that the people of Lithuania expect concrete results from us. Therefore, we must first focus on solving the most pressing issues: rising prices and the cost of living, social inequality and poverty, economic growth, the creation of quality jobs, and access to healthcare,” he said.

The incoming prime minister outlined priorities including improving conditions for families and children, boosting economic competitiveness through AI, digital solutions, and defence industry development. He also highlighted plans to strengthen infrastructure, regional governance, public services, and national security—particularly air defence—amid growing geopolitical tensions.

Sinkevičius pledged to work closely with coalition partners to implement necessary reforms, ensuring the government’s work delivers tangible benefits for citizens and strengthens Lithuania’s future.
