Vilnius begins renovation of Pašilaičiai square and avenue
Vilnius city municipality has started renovation works on Ugnijos Square and Čikagos Avenue in the Pašilaičiai district, local media LRT reports.
The Vilnius Development Company announced that the city has already issued a construction permit for the project. According to Vilnius Mayor Valdo Benkunskas, the renovation of public spaces is being carried out systematically, focusing on community needs and improving the quality of the living environment.
“Ugnijos Square and Čikagos Avenue in Pašilaičiai are important and well-known spaces for the local community, so their changes are planned in close cooperation with residents. We aim to make them more attractive, vibrant, and adapted to the needs of Vilnius residents of all ages after the renovation,” Benkunskas said.
Ugnijos Square will feature a themed playground for children, divided into zones suitable for different age groups, inspired by the Lithuanian nature goddesses Gabija, Medeina, and Žemyna. The square will also include a community gathering area, recreational spaces, and extensive greenery to create safer and quieter zones. Additionally, lighting, small architectural elements, and a video surveillance camera will be installed.
Čikagos Avenue will have its main path renovated, widened, and adapted for more intensive pedestrian traffic. Alongside the path, areas for quiet relaxation, sports, and active leisure will be created, equipped with workout equipment and outdoor game tables. The existing playground will also be renovated, and the surrounding trolleybus stop accesses will be greened. The entire area will feature new benches, chairs with backrests, bicycle racks, hammocks, a drinking fountain, trash bins, information stands, lighting, and a video surveillance system.
