Nausėda supports universal conscription but stresses need for proper preparation

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda supports the idea of introducing universal conscription but emphasizes the need for thorough preparation, according to a statement from the presidential office reported by ELTA.

“The president supports the idea of universal conscription. However, its implementation requires proper preparation—establishing the necessary infrastructure and training more instructors for conscripts. The number of conscripts is already being gradually increased,” the presidential office told ELTA.

While there is no deliberate delay in implementing universal conscription, the statement noted that Lithuania must currently focus on urgent priorities, including strengthening air defense, preparing infrastructure for the full deployment of a German brigade by the end of 2027, and achieving full operational capability for the national division by 2030.

Last summer, Nausėda stated that the transition to universal conscription was only a matter of time as Lithuania forms its national division, though he acknowledged a lack of resources. He later suggested that the current focus should be on universal military service for men.

Universal conscription is not yet in place, but discussions continue. Opinions vary: Chief of Defense Raimundas Vaikšnoras recently stated on social media that he sees no current need for universal conscription, as the existing pool of conscript-age men suffices, especially with a significant number of volunteers.

Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas said in late May that Lithuania is moving toward universal conscription but stressed the importance of quality preparation. This year, a new mandatory initial military service system took effect, aiming to increase conscript numbers by calling up 18–22-year-olds immediately after school, narrowing the previous age range of 18–23.
