Lithuania’s hydrometeorological service to become climate adaptation competence centre
Lithuania’s Hydrometeorological Service will become a national competence centre for climate change adaptation, providing expertise in extreme weather and other climate-related situations, reports LRT.
The service will manage the national observation network, issue warnings, and assist municipalities in preparing and implementing climate adaptation plans. Sixteen municipalities will be required to develop such plans in the near future.
On Thursday, the Seimas (parliament) adopted the Climate Change Adaptation Law, which establishes this role. The vote saw 85 MPs in favour, two against, and 14 abstentions. According to the Ministry of Environment, the law will improve information sharing for residents, the state, municipalities, and businesses on climate adaptation matters.
