Doctor’s wife seeks to lift 30-year-old seizure on her land plot

A court in Vilnius is considering a request by Ramutė Daktarienė, the wife of convicted crime boss Henrikas Daktaras, to lift a decades-old seizure on her land plot in the Kaunas district, LRT reports.

Vilnius Regional Court judge Mindaugas Povilanskas began examining the request on Tuesday but adjourned the hearing after a representative of the Prosecutor General’s Office failed to appear. The prosecution had supported charges in Daktaras’ criminal cases.

“Representatives of the Prosecutor General’s Office were summoned to the hearing, and a link for remote participation was sent. As we can see, the representative did not join,” the judge said, noting that Daktarienė herself attended remotely. He added that the case was old enough to proceed without the prosecution, but ultimately decided to reschedule to allow their participation, reminding them of their duty to attend.

Daktarienė told the court she had discovered a 1998 document related to the plot and was asked to submit a copy to the court later. She complained that while a seizure on her house had been lifted, the land remained restricted.

In her application, Daktarienė stated that her husband had been convicted and sentenced, and all claims against him had been satisfied. However, a 1997 entry regarding the land seizure remains. No records exist of which official imposed it.

“I ask the court to grant my request. These are old matters. Maybe I’ll need to sell it someday,” Daktarienė explained. She said part of the plot was gifted to her by her brother, while she purchased the rest in 1994 using investment vouchers.

The court will hold another hearing on July 13 to hear the prosecutor’s position.

LRT notes that Daktarienė has unsuccessfully tried to sell the residential house, known as the Daktarų Pilaitė, in the Kaunas district for years. The 644-square-metre property is listed for €950,000, including a nearly 44-are plot.

Henrikas Daktaras, 68, is currently serving a life sentence without parole in Pravieniškės Second Prison, where he has been incarcerated since 2018. Courts have repeatedly rejected his appeals for a fixed-term sentence.

In 2013, the Klaipėda Regional Court ruled that Daktaras led a criminal group between 1993 and 2000, whose members were armed with firearms, explosives, and incendiary devices used or intended for serious crimes, including murders, extortion, and robberies. The court described his criminal activity as a way of life, deeming him a persistent danger to society.

Daktaras was sentenced to life imprisonment for organising an armed group to commit grave and particularly grave crimes. Several other members of the group also received convictions. The final ruling in his case was issued in April 2016 when the Supreme Court dismissed his cassation appeal.
