The 2nd Regiment of the Dariaus and Girėnas District of Lithuania’s Volunteer Defence Forces (KASP) launched the week-long evaluation exercise Iron Shield 2 on Monday, the Lithuanian Armed Forces announced.

The tactical field drills mark the final stage of KASP’s three-year military training cycle, assessing the regiment’s readiness to perform national defence tasks. Around 1,000 volunteer troops will participate in operations across Kaunas, Šakiai, Kazlų Rūda, Marijampolė, Vilkaviškis, and Prienai municipalities—areas under the regiment’s responsibility.

Exercises will evaluate the regiment’s staff and infantry companies on operational planning, execution, coordination with other Lithuanian military units, and integration with NATO allies. Members of the Lithuanian Riflemen’s Union will also take part.

A key objective is strengthening cooperation between military personnel and civilian society to boost public trust in Lithuania’s defence forces and NATO partners. The drills will involve collaboration with state institutions, municipalities, NGOs, and private-sector representatives, with some tasks conducted in civilian areas following prior agreements with local authorities.

Troops will operate day and night, moving on foot and in wheeled military vehicles, using blank ammunition, pyrotechnics, and smoke devices to simulate combat conditions.
