US president Trump thanks Lithuania for commitment to Hormuz Strait security

US president Donald Trump has thanked Lithuania for its readiness to contribute to ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, according to a letter received by Lithuanian president Gitanas Nausėda, the president’s office reported on Wednesday.

In his response, Trump expressed gratitude for Lithuania’s support of US efforts and its agreement to participate in the Maritime Freedom Corridor initiative. The US president emphasised that the Strait of Hormuz must remain fully open to restore unrestricted shipping.

“Lithuania’s proposal to deploy troops for this initiative means a great deal to me,” Trump wrote, calling Lithuania a “trusted friend and partner” of the United States. He highlighted Lithuania’s willingness to grant access and permanent deployment options for US forces as further proof of the unbroken bond between the two nations, enduring for over a century.

Trump also stated he looks forward to meeting with Nausėda soon and reaffirmed his commitment to building a “stronger, safer, and more prosperous future” for both countries.

The Lithuanian State Defence Council, chaired by Nausėda, approved the deployment of up to 40 military and civilian personnel on May 11 to join allied maritime security operations in the Strait of Hormuz. The government was instructed to promptly seek parliamentary approval for the mission. Lithuania has also offered logistical support and access to its military infrastructure in response to US needs.
