The Lithuanian Seimas held a minute of silence on Tuesday to honour Yevgeniy Shuklin, a lawmaker and Olympic rower who died unexpectedly last month, as a special exhibition dedicated to his legacy opened in the parliament building, LRT.lt reports.

Speaker Juozas Olekas called on colleagues to pay tribute to Shuklin, describing him as a dedicated public servant and athlete who “passionately cared for the people of Visaginas” and “defended Lithuania’s honour in sport.” The 41-year-old Liberal Movement MP passed away on May 28 after complications from a viral infection and pneumonia.

Later in the day, fellow lawmakers, party members, and representatives from Visaginas attended the unveiling of the exhibition “Creative Threads and Colours from Visaginas” in the Seimas’ Gallery of Exhibitions. The display celebrates Shuklin’s contributions to his community and the nation.

Shuklin began his political career in 2014 on the Visaginas Municipal Council, where he served for a decade and briefly acted as mayor in 2023. Elected to the Seimas in 2024, he was a member of the Liberal Movement since 2022. Born in Glazov, Russia, in 1985, he held a master’s degree in public administration.

A decorated canoeist, Shuklin won multiple medals at world championships and competed in the 2012 London Olympics.
