Proposed head of Lithuania’s Genocide and Resistance Research Centre pledges focus on partisan remains

The candidate nominated to lead Lithuania’s Genocide and Resistance Research Centre (LGGRTC), Donata Kabelkė, has pledged to prioritise the search and identification of remains of anti-Soviet partisans, according to a report by BNS.

Presenting her vision to parliament on Tuesday, Kabelkė stated she would ensure the work is conducted systematically, guided by clear methodology, while maintaining respect for the remains of those who fought for freedom. “I would give special attention to the search and identification of partisan remains,” she said.

Kabelkė also emphasised plans to strengthen academic ties, integrate Lithuania’s historical experiences into broader European research, and make the centre’s archived data more accessible to the public and scholars. She underscored the importance of fostering societal resilience, arguing that communities capable of understanding historical choices become more robust in recognising threats to democracy and valuing freedom.

“One of the centre’s key tasks is to help society discuss historical dilemmas—the choices made during occupations, civic responsibility, the cost of freedom, and the lessons of these experiences today,” she explained.

The LGGRTC, which evaluates crimes committed by totalitarian regimes and during Lithuania’s occupations, plays a vital role in preserving and conveying 20th-century Lithuanian history to future generations, Kabelkė noted.

Seimas Speaker Juozas Olekas said the nomination followed the centre’s board recommendation, which concluded Kabelkė had outlined a clear vision for the institution, possessed the necessary competencies, and had sufficient leadership experience in relevant fields. The final appointment decision rests with parliament.
