Social workshops open employment opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities

A growing number of social workshops across Lithuania are helping people with intellectual disabilities gain professional skills and secure paid work, reports LRT. Businesses partnering with these initiatives praise the participants for their responsibility and dedication, while workers say the experience builds confidence and financial independence.

A recent project saw participants from the Naujasis Daugėliškis social workshop in Ignalina district assemble packaging for a new family travel game, Pokalbių gidas (“Conversation Guide”). The game, designed to encourage children to engage with their surroundings during trips, was developed by entrepreneur Julija Lozda. She chose the workshop for its reliability and attention to detail.

“They’re highly motivated, responsive to feedback, and meet deadlines—qualities any business values,” Lozda said. “Their work is professional, warm, and deeply human.”

Volunteer Jūratė Pernavienė noted the participants’ pride in their work: “They take their tasks seriously, even if it takes longer. Seeing their work appreciated means a lot to them.”

Beyond vocational training, the workshops focus on social integration and financial literacy. “We teach the value of earning money and self-motivation,” explained specialist Solveiga Stanevičiūtė. “The goal is for them to eventually transition to the open job market.”

Workers are already planning how to spend their earnings—some hope to travel within Lithuania, while others dream of trips abroad. One participant shared, “We’ll decide together where to go. I’ve never been far from Lithuania before.”

Lithuania currently has 60 social workshops, supporting over 700 people with intellectual or psychosocial disabilities in developing job skills and securing employment opportunities.
