Lithuanian police dismantle large-scale cigarette smuggling operation using balloons

Lithuanian authorities have dismantled a major cigarette smuggling ring in the Šalčininkai district that used balloons to transport contraband across the border, the Vilnius County Chief Police Commissariat announced on Wednesday.

During a coordinated operation, officers from the Criminal Police’s Organized Crime Investigation Board, Šalčininkai District Police Commissariat, and the Public Order Service’s Special Preparedness Division intercepted two suspicious vehicles in a forest near Naujasodis village. The cars were allegedly prepared for illegal cargo transport, with 24 boxes of Belarus-labeled cigarettes found nearby.

Investigators believe the cigarettes—totaling 12,000 packs with an estimated street value of €65,000 including unpaid taxes—were smuggled into Lithuania via balloons, a method increasingly used by criminal groups to bypass border controls.

Two suspects were detained at the scene, while a third turned himself in shortly after realizing authorities had identified him. Searches of their vehicles, homes, and associated premises uncovered a cache of equipment used to coordinate the operation and evade law enforcement, including GPS devices, signal jammers, night-vision gear, computers, phones, and cash.

A pre-trial investigation has been launched for smuggling and illegal handling of excise goods. The three suspects face up to eight years in prison; all have been remanded in custody for three months. The Vilnius Regional Prosecutor’s Office is overseeing the case, with further arrests expected as the probe continues.
