Lithuania completes €1.08m anti-tank firing range at Rūdninkai training ground
The Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence announced on Friday the completion of a €1.08 million anti-tank weapons firing range complex at the Rūdninkai military training ground, as reported by the Baltic News Service (BNS).
The new facility includes two firing positions, an observation tower, a protective embankment at the range’s end, an access road, a sheltered area for personnel and ammunition distribution, and a vehicle parking lot. The complex is designed to accommodate training for Lithuanian troops, Germany’s deployed brigade, and allied forces.
Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas stated the project marks “another important phase” in strengthening military infrastructure, emphasising ongoing rapid development in this area. The ministry noted the facility will enhance joint defensive preparedness and operational capabilities for both Lithuanian and German units.
The Rūdninkai training ground, located in Šalčininkai district, is part of Lithuania’s broader effort to host a 5,000-strong German brigade by late 2027. The first phase of the €125 million military town project, led by construction firm Eika Construction, is nearing completion this year. A second phase, valued at approximately €1.3 billion over 15 years, was launched in January under a public-private partnership.
Contracts for the second phase were awarded to Rudina (Lithuanian-owned, €487.6 million), and Estonia’s Merko Statyba (two lots totalling €846.75 million). Germany plans to station most of its brigade at Rūdninkai, with engineering and reconnaissance units based in Rukla, Jonava district.
