The Central Electoral Commission (VRK) has announced that a by-election will be held in Lithuania’s Nalšia North constituency following the death of MP Jevgenijus Šuklinas, who represented the district, LRT reports.

Under electoral law, the vote must take place within six months of a single-member constituency seat becoming vacant. The Seimas will set the exact date within 30 days of the vacancy arising. Preliminary estimates place the cost of the by-election at around €700,000.

Šuklinas, a member of the Liberal Movement, was elected to parliament in 2024. A former canoeist and Olympic athlete, he had also served as acting mayor of Visaginas. His death at age 41 was announced on Thursday evening, prompting tributes from President Gitanas Nausėda, Prime Minister Ingrida Ruginienė, and other political figures.
