Lithuanian lawmaker and Olympian Jevgenijus Šuklinas remembered as warm and dedicated figure

Lithuanian politicians from across the political spectrum have paid tribute to Jevgenijus Šuklinas, a Liberal Movement lawmaker and Olympic canoeist who died unexpectedly at the age of 41, describing him as an intelligent, warm-hearted and dedicated public figure, reports LRT.

Eugenijus Gentvilas, a fellow Liberal Movement member, recalled Šuklinas as “a very warm, bright person” with a disciplined and responsible nature. “I’ve known him for about eight years—he was always organised, always took initiative,” Gentvilas told LRT. “When I say he was bright, it’s because he even loved wearing light-coloured suits. He had this light grey suit that really reflected his character.”

Seimas Speaker Juozas Olekas emphasised Šuklinas’ professionalism and composure, calling him “one of the most intelligent and well-mannered people in the Seimas.” Despite political differences, Olekas noted their interactions were always respectful. “I never heard a harsh word from him. We’ll miss his intelligence, his restraint,” he said.

Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė also expressed condolences, stating Lithuania had lost “an outstanding individual who inspired with his determination in both sports and politics.” Conservative leader Laurynas Kasčiūnas remembered Šuklinas primarily as an Olympian and medalist, praising his dedication to his hometown of Visaginas. “He was always smiling, a truly wonderful colleague,” Kasčiūnas said.

Šuklinas, who began his political career in 2014 on the Visaginas municipal council before joining the Seimas in 2023, was the youngest member of the Liberal Movement’s parliamentary faction. The party’s leader, Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, described him as “full of energy and ideas,” deeply committed to his community, education, and public service. “We will remember Jevgenijus as he was—active, strong, sincere, and bright,” she wrote in a statement.

Social Democrat leader Mindaugas Sinkevičius and other political figures extended sympathies to Šuklinas’ family, friends, and constituents, calling his loss a profound tragedy.
