Firefighter dies battling forest fire in Lazdijai district

A firefighter has died while responding to a forest fire in Lithuania’s Lazdijai district, local officials confirmed on Tuesday.

According to preliminary reports, the blaze broke out in a woodland area under the jurisdiction of Veisiejai eldership. Lazdijai municipality mayor Ausma Miškinienė expressed condolences over the loss, stating that while firefighting operations are ongoing, the incident has already claimed the life of one emergency responder.

The Fire Protection and Rescue Department later confirmed the death of the municipal firefighter. Lithuania’s Interior Ministry issued a statement on social media extending “deepest condolences to the family, loved ones, colleagues, and all emergency service personnel” affected by the tragedy.

Interior Minister Vladislavas Kondratovičius described the loss as “a painful tragedy not only for the service community but for society as a whole,” acknowledging the ultimate sacrifice made by those in a profession demanding “exceptional courage, dedication, and selflessness.”
