Vilnius residents lose over €8,600 in phone scams

Fraudsters have swindled three Vilnius residents out of a combined €8,600 in separate phone scams, Lithuanian police reported Monday.

According to the Vilnius County Chief Police Commissariat, a 76-year-old woman was defrauded of €3,900 on May 15 after receiving calls from Russian-speaking individuals posing as tax inspectors and police officers. The scammers convinced her to hand over the money to an unknown man who arrived at her home.

On the same day, a 83-year-old woman lost €2,390.98 to unknown callers, while an 87-year-old woman was tricked out of €2,340 in a separate incident. All three victims were targeted at home.

Pre-trial investigations into the fraud cases have been launched.
