No immediate threat to NATO’s eastern flank, says alliance’s military chief

NATO’s international military staff chief has stated there is currently no heightened risk of aggression against the alliance’s eastern flank, following reports of US troop adjustments in Europe, LRT reports.

Speaking to LRT Radio on Friday, Lithuanian Major General Remigijus Baltrėnas addressed recent US media coverage of the abrupt cancellation of a planned troop rotation in Poland and the Pentagon’s decision to withdraw part of its forces from Germany.

“While I cannot comment on the very recent announcements, I can confirm that at this moment, there is no increased risk of attack or threat to defence on NATO’s eastern flank,” Baltrėnas said.

The remarks come as the United States adjusts its military presence in Europe. Poland is in discussions with Washington about expanding the US troop deployment in the country, including the potential relocation of 5,000 soldiers currently stationed in Germany.
