Lithuanian Riflemen’s Union to restructure into battalions for better military integration

The Lithuanian government has approved a Defence Ministry proposal to reorganise the Lithuanian Riflemen’s Union (LRSU) into battalion-sized units, enabling smoother coordination with the country’s armed forces in joint operations, LRT reports.

Defence Ministry officials stated the restructuring will allow the volunteer force—currently numbering over 19,000 members—to integrate more effectively into national defence structures when required. “The LRSU plays a vital role in total defence, and these changes ensure all components of the system operate precisely and in sync,” said ministry representative Robertas Kaunas.

Under the plan, LRSU units will be consolidated into larger battalions matching the army’s command structure and capabilities. Some battalions will include armed resistance riflemen assigned to regional military commandant offices, ensuring pre-organised, combat-ready units can be rapidly deployed.

The government also authorised the LRSU to establish aviation squadrons, standardising terminology with the military and clarifying the distinct roles of ground units (platoons) and air units. The ministry noted this would improve intelligence, logistics, and early-warning operations by leveraging civilian aviation expertise and equipment for defence and peacetime rescue missions.
