A woman’s body was discovered in Jurbarkas district on Monday, with her son now suspected of her murder after he himself alerted authorities, Lithuanian National Radio and Television (LRT) reports.

The 65-year-old woman was found dead in her home in Armeniškiai village at around 7 a.m. Her 32-year-old son, who was intoxicated (2.46‰ blood alcohol level), has been detained. He had previously been convicted of a minor offence.

Kaunas Regional Prosecutor’s Office confirmed the case has been reclassified from grievous bodily harm to murder. Prosecutor Agnė Pociūtė told ELTA news agency that the investigation is now proceeding under Article 129, Part 2, Clause 3 of the Criminal Code, which covers the murder of a parent or child and carries a penalty of 5 to 20 years in prison or life imprisonment.

According to Pociūtė, the detained man reported the incident to police himself while intoxicated. Authorities are currently conducting preliminary investigations to establish the circumstances of the death. A decision on preventive measures for the suspect will be made following further procedural steps.
