The Kaunas Regional Prosecutor’s Office has challenged a parole board’s decision to grant early release to Vytautas Gapšys, a former lawmaker convicted in a high-profile political corruption case, state news agency BNS reported on Monday.

The Parole Commission recommended on May 4 that Gapšys, who has served most of his sentence, be released on parole with one year and nine months remaining. However, prosecutors argue the commission’s risk assessment failed to adequately account for “correctable factors” linked to Gapšys’ lifestyle, environment, mindset, and behavior.

“Prosecutors maintain that the social inquiry concluded the convict still exhibits traits requiring further correction, meaning the rehabilitation process should continue,” the Prosecutor General’s Office stated.

The Kaunas Regional Prosecutor’s Office has filed an appeal in court to overturn the commission’s ruling.

Gapšys, a former member of the MG Group (previously MG Baltic), was convicted in a political corruption case that drew significant public attention.
